Symptoms:

Diagnosis:
- Check for fault codes using an OBD-II scanner to identify specific sensor or system failures
- Inspect the diesel particulate filter (DPF) for clogging or regeneration issues, common in these engines
- Examine the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve for carbon buildup causing poor airflow
- Test the fuel injectors for leaks or malfunction, as injector problems are frequent
- Verify the condition of the turbocharger and related hoses for leaks or damage
- Assess the timing belt condition and tension, as failure can cause severe engine damage

Fixes:
- Perform a forced DPF regeneration or replace the DPF if severely clogged
- Clean or replace the EGR valve to restore proper exhaust flow and reduce emissions
- Replace faulty fuel injectors or repair injector wiring harnesses to ensure correct fuel delivery
- Repair or replace the turbocharger components if damaged or leaking
- Change the timing belt and associated tensioners at recommended intervals to prevent failure
- Regularly replace engine oil and filters to maintain engine health and prevent premature wear

Prevention:
- Use high-quality diesel fuel and adhere to recommended oil change intervals to reduce deposits
- Avoid frequent short trips that prevent the DPF from reaching regeneration temperature
- Periodically drive at higher RPMs to facilitate DPF regeneration and prevent clogging
- Schedule regular maintenance checks focusing on the EGR system, injectors, and turbocharger
- Replace the timing belt as per manufacturer’s schedule, typically every 60,000 to 90,000 km
