API CH-4
MB 229.0

A OM603 motor.

Engine OM603

Symptoms:
- Rough idling and poor acceleration
- Excessive smoke from the exhaust (black or blue)
- Hard starting or failure to start
- Overheating or coolant leaks
- Oil leaks around the valve cover or turbocharger area
- Loss of power under load

Diagnosis:
- Check for clogged fuel injectors or faulty injection pump causing poor fuel delivery
- Inspect turbocharger for shaft play or oil leaks leading to reduced boost
- Examine valve stem seals and turbocharger oil seals for leaks causing smoke
- Test glow plugs and glow plug relay for starting issues in cold conditions
- Inspect cooling system for leaks, radiator blockages, or failing thermostat causing overheating
- Look for worn timing chain or tensioner leading to timing issues and rough running

Fixes:
- Clean or replace fuel injectors; overhaul or replace injection pump if necessary
- Repair or replace turbocharger seals or the entire turbo if damaged
- Replace valve stem seals to stop blue smoke and oil consumption
- Replace faulty glow plugs and relay to improve cold starts
- Flush cooling system, replace thermostat, and repair leaks to prevent overheating
- Replace timing chain and tensioner to restore proper engine timing and smooth operation
- Regular oil changes with correct grade oil to maintain turbo and engine health

Prevention:
- Use high-quality diesel fuel and regularly replace fuel filters to avoid injector damage
- Maintain proper oil change intervals to protect turbocharger and engine internals
- Monitor coolant levels and condition to prevent overheating and gasket failure
- Avoid prolonged idling and excessive engine loads to extend turbocharger life
- Periodically inspect and replace timing chain components before excessive wear occurs
- Use OEM or high-quality replacement parts for repairs to ensure reliability
