Symptoms:
- Loss of power and poor acceleration
- Excessive smoke from the exhaust, especially black smoke
- Rough idling or engine misfires
- Increased fuel consumption
- Warning lights on the dashboard, such as the check engine light or glow plug indicator

Diagnosis:
- Check for fault codes using a diagnostic scanner to identify specific issues related to the fuel system, turbocharger, or EGR valve
- Inspect the diesel particulate filter (DPF) for clogging or damage, as this engine is equipped with a DPF
- Test the fuel injectors for proper operation and leaks
- Examine the turbocharger for signs of wear or boost leaks
- Verify the condition and operation of the EGR valve and associated sensors
- Check for vacuum leaks and intake manifold integrity

Fixes:
- Clean or replace the diesel particulate filter if clogged or damaged
- Replace faulty fuel injectors or repair injector wiring and connectors
- Repair or replace the turbocharger if worn or damaged
- Clean or replace the EGR valve to restore proper exhaust gas recirculation
- Replace faulty sensors such as the MAF or MAP sensor if identified during diagnosis
- Perform a thorough fuel system cleaning to remove deposits and improve injector performance
- Address vacuum leaks by replacing hoses or gaskets as needed

Prevention:
- Use high-quality diesel fuel and adhere to recommended service intervals
- Regularly perform DPF regeneration cycles by driving at appropriate speeds and conditions to prevent clogging
- Avoid short trips that prevent the engine from reaching optimal operating temperature
- Schedule routine maintenance including fuel filter changes and injector cleaning
- Monitor engine performance and address warning lights promptly to prevent further damage
